  • (BP) =Brewpub

  • (P) Angry Dog 2726 Commerce (in Deep Ellum) (214) 741 - 4406

100 beers and 20 taps. Also a location in Arlington (which sports 40+ taps) at :3701 S. Cooper St. # 123 76015 Website for both locations is here

  • (P) Barley House - Henderson

Bar a block East of North Central Expressway (Near Yegua Creek) . 16 good beers on draught (including Celis) and more in bottles. The decor is basic and they are just gearing up to be a simple neighborhood pub. Presently rumored to be exploring the possibility of adding a 2-3bbl brewery (but in a different location) . Also maintain a web page here

  • (P) Bavarian Grill 221 W. Parker Rd. (Plano) ; 972-881-0705

Best German restaurant in DFW rated by the DMN.

One of the best 100 neighborhood restaurants voted by D magazine.

  • (P) Ben's Half Yard Greenville Ave. (Between Park Ln. and Walnut Hill)

    Formerly The Medieval Inn

Andrew Gates (agates@gte.net reports that: (after the change-over it's) basically the same, excepts the waitresses are no longer in costume. Cool thing is for the month of April(98) , Guiness is $5.00 a half yard instead of $6.00.

Jerry Ward (exuward@exu.ericsson.se) says : Highly recommended. They have 38 beers on tap (lots of English and German brands) . They serve beer in pints ($4.00) , half-yards ($6.00) , and full-yards (~$11.00) . Every weekday from 4:00 till 7:00pm, happy-hour 10 oz. drafts are $1.00 (tax incl.) . Monday night pints are $2.50 and Thursday night half-yards are $5.00. The atmosphere is slightly cheesy and anachronistic (long wooden tables, wenches, and 80's pop music) , but tolerable. I suggest going there for happy hour.

  • (BP) Big Horn 700 Six Flags Dr. (Arlington)

  • (P) The Dubliner on Lower Greenville

Steve Parks (stephen.i.parks@ac.com) reports: It is as authentic as any pub I visited in Ireland (as the number of Brits in the place would suggest) . OK selection of beer, mostly Irish or British. On the downside, the number of Europeans can make this one of the smokiest bars in town.

  • (P) The Flying Saucer 770 Road To Six Flags E, (Arlington) 76011; (817) 226-7468.

Another branch of the Fort Worth-based chain.

  • (P) The Flying Saucer 14999 Monfort (Addison) 214-934-2537

The second branch of the Fort Worth based bar. Bill Kniering (74227.3563@compuserve.com) reports: They have 114 taps with beers from all over the world and alot of the local of breweries. Beer is fresh and they have a very nice selection of ports and cigars.

  • (P) The Gingerman - 2718 Boll St; (214) 754-8771

Pub at the corner of Boll and Howell a block off of McKinney Ave about a mile North of downtown. By the people who own Gingerman's in Houston. Around 50 taps of good fresh beer. Wines as well, and some food. They also sell beer glassware and t-shirts. Crowded during peak "happy hours". They have a nice back outdoor area and upstairs balcony.

  • (MB) Great Grains Brewery

Brews a beer called "Texas Tornado" and serves as contract brewer of the brews from the old Hill Country Brewery (Red Granite and others) . If I'm not mistaken, this is the 75th iteration of the same plant that once was Texas Brewing, among many, many others.

  • (BP) Humperdinks 6050 Greenville 214-368-1203

-Sort of a sports bar that added brewing. No other information. Other locations, 700 6 Flags Dr. (Arlington) 817-640-8553; 2208 W NW Hwy 214-358-4159.

  • (BP) Humperdinks on Beltline in Addison (near the old Rock Bottom)

  • (BP) The Hoffbrau Steaks and Brewery 4180 Belt Line Rd, just west of Midway Rd, (214) 392-1161.

The Knox street edition is now also on tap with their brew .

Greg Ellis (gumdoc@aol.com) says (of the Belt Line local) :The Yellow Rose Cream Ale (Silver medal in 1995 GABF) was a very light bodoed ale recomended for those who would like to have a Bud but find it unavailable. If you are looking for flavor, don't choose this one.

Rodeo Red (American Pale Ale) was lightly hopped (almost none) which could be considered out of style. Palatable, but with probably a higher level of maltiness than should be expected with this category.

Shawnee Amber Ale was as weak in flavor as the cream ale.

Buffalo Ale (American Brown ale) was not quite as robust as they touted it to be. There was a distinct roasted flavor to the beer. Blackrock Bock... this is a Shiner in the rough. It is what the brewery calls "an American Style bock". Not the maltiness that one would expect from a bock. Low to no hops which is expected. This tasted like Shiner.

Texas Special 101 Porter... Very weak nose, w/ no characteristic flavors to speak of.

Strawberries and Wheat... this tasted like an artificial strawberry adjunct was used probably in the late fermentation or in the server. I am not sure what the flavor was but the beer tasted like that Coconut rum flavor from Jamaica. It may be a DMS flavor.

Cask conditioned ale... (forget this one) it was so weak I thought I ordered a glass of water. No hops, no nose, no aftertaste for God's sake. After drinking for a while I noticed an orange flavor. The only good thing about this beer is that they drew it from a beer engine. At least they got that right. Not recomded at all. Extremely disappointed with the cask ale.

The bartenders were extremely rude and only interested in serving the attractive ladies at the bar. The were very sarcastic with the customers and that alone would probably prevent me from going back anytime soon. I believe that over all the beers were ok. The flavors of the beere did follow the descriptions on the beer menu for the most part. Even if their beer was the most incredible in the world I would dock them for the rudeness of the bartenders.

  • (P) Londoner (Addison)

English style pub with the requisite English Ales on hand.

  • (P) O'Dowd's Pub McKinney

    -No info

  • (P) Old Monk 2847 N Henderson; 214-821-1880

Belgian ales, apparently in quantity, at this bar.

  • (P) Slider & Blues (a Dallas area franchise with a location in Plano)

Jim Peters(japeters@dal.mobil.com) reports that this place is a sports type bar with burgers, quesadillas, pizza, etc... . What makes the place unique is the wide selection of beers available, 130, and growing. The beers are divided into "kennels" of nationality and state. A true oddball offering is Frontier Lager from Evansville Indiana, 100% organic, but it lacks any other desirable characteristics.

  • Stan's Blue Note 2908 Greenville Ave

Stan's has two bars. The original bar with more than 150 Bottled beers. The new bar or taphouse bar has over 50 beers on tap. Seperate T-shirts are available for completion of each list. There's a Stan's page here

  • The Tipperary Inn Skillman and Live Oak

Cochran (redstal@aol.com) reports: The best Guinness that I have found in Dallas, an authentic Irish Pub, and they claim to sell more Guinness that any other place in Texas (It is always fresh, too.)

  • (BP) Two Rows Brewing - in Old Town Center (5500 Greenville Ave, Suite 1300) (214) 696-2739)

When I visited the brewpub the offerings were a Honey Blonde Ale, a Porter, an Oatmeal Stout, and a Barleywine. Both the Porter and Stout were quite tasty and free of off flavors. The Barleywine was underhopped and a bit thin for the style, but I give points to the brewery just for attempting a somewhat difficult and expensive style. I didn't try the light Blonde offering. The food was along the ecclectic path that most brewpubs seem to offer these days. I had the chicken enchilada pizza which was quite good.

The owners of Two Rows are: Kenny Tolbert, Robert Ross, Rusty Loeffler, and Mike Brotzman. The manager is Blaine Brooks, former Oklahoma University baseball star.

paul larson (palarson@dal.mobil.com) reports:the IPA (India Pale Ale) reminds me of the best English Bitters and should definitely be tried.

  • (BP) Two Rows --Allen

Newly opened branch of the chain; this location may just be a tap-house with no "homebrew" as of yet. No other info yet.
